Joining Stockinette Fabric

joining stockinette stitch fabric vertically & horizontally

Joining vertical stitches

To join your Stockinette Stitch fabric with the stitches running vertically, insert your tapestry needle under first one, then the other side of the knit stitch as shown above, then pull your needle through.

Joining Fabric Vertically

Now with the second piece of fabric, insert the needle under first one, then the second side of the corresponding knit stitch as shown above. Pull the yarn snug to close the gap.

Continue to work backwards and forwards from first one fabric to the next, sewing under each knit stitch until the entire seam has been worked closed.

Joining Fabric Horizontally

To join your Stockinette Stitch fabric when the stitches are running horizontally ie. at the sides of a sweater, insert your tapestry needle into the uppermost loop of you knit stitch as shown above first from one piece of fabric, then into the next.

Joining Fabric Horizontally

Now repeat inserting but working from the top fabric into the bottom fabric. Pull the yarn snug to close the gap.

Continue to work this way until the entire seam has been worked closed.
